The Jōmon people made many beautiful things. They made tools from stone, bone, and antler. They made jewelry from shells. They were also famous for their clay pots. People pressed cords into the wet clay to make patterns. This gave the pots a special look.

These people came from many different places. Some ancestors came from Northeast Asia. Others came from China or Southeast Asia. They were a very diverse group of people.

As time passed, the land changed. At first, Japan was linked to the mainland. Then, melting ice caused sea levels to rise. This turned Japan into a group of islands.

Later, new people called the Yayoi arrived. The Jōmon and Yayoi lived together. This mix of people helped shape the modern Japanese population. The Jōmon period lasted for about 14,000 years.
