This location makes it a very important hub for travel. It connects the north-south Beijing-Shanghai axis with the east-west Land Bridge. Because so many paths meet here, it is a central city for the Huaihai Economic Zone. Many people live here, with about 9.08 million people according to the 2020 census.

For a long time, the city has been a center for moving goods. In the past, the Grand Canal was a main way to travel. However, the river had two rocky areas called rapids that made sailing hard.

To avoid these, some canals took a different path. Later, the city became a major spot for railways. Now, it serves as a national transport hub for many different types of travel. This helps people and things move across the country easily.

History is found in every corner of Xuzhou. It was once the home of the Han dynasty imperial family.

You can find many ancient things there, like the Shizishan tomb. This tomb belonged to Prince Liu Wu and had special jade burial suits. The city also holds the site of China's earliest recorded Buddhist community.

Even older remains from the Dawenkou culture show that people lived here a very long time ago.

Managing the water around the city has always been a big job. The Yellow River often caused problems with flooding in the past. In 1019, a breach in the river flooded the walled city.

Later, a leader named Su Shi helped build a special embankment to protect the city. The city also had to deal with many changes as the rivers moved. These shifts in the land changed how people lived and worked for many years.

Today, Xuzhou is changing once again. It used to be a place where people mined a lot of coal. Now, the city focuses on making heavy machinery and new energy tools.

The city worked hard to fix the land that was used for mining. This work to help the environment was so good that it won a prize from the United Nations. Xuzhou shows how an old city can grow into something new and clean.
