Most sunbeam snakes spend time in the dirt. They are fossorial. This means they live underground. They come out at dusk to hunt. They look for frogs and small mammals. They also eat other snakes. These snakes are not venomous. They use constriction to kill prey. This means they squeeze their food.

There are three types of sunbeam snakes. One type is called Xenopeltis unicolor. It is the most common kind.
