He helped start a new art style called Vorticism. This style used geometric shapes to create a sense of energy. He even helped start a magazine called Blast to share these ideas.

Lewis had a very specific way of making his art. He wanted to combine different styles into something new. He liked the strong shapes found in Cubism. However, he thought Cubism was not quite alive enough. He also liked the movement found in Futurist art. But he felt Futurist art lacked a strong structure. By mixing these ideas, he created a dramatic style. This style was a way to look at the modern world.

During the war, he worked in observation posts. He watched the lines and helped call out targets. Later, he became an official war artist. He painted things like "A Canadian Gun-pit" and "A Battery Shelled." These paintings showed what he saw during the conflict.

Lewis wrote many important books throughout his long career. One of his most famous novels is called Tarr. It was published in book form in 1918. He also wrote books about his own life. These are called autobiographies, such as Blasting and Bombardiering.

He also wrote many essays about art and culture. Some of his books, like The Apes of God, were very sharp and funny. He used his writing to comment on the world around him.

Even as he got older, Lewis kept making art. He returned to painting many portraits of famous people.
