World literature

arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

World literature is a big collection of stories. It includes books from many different countries. A book becomes world literature when it travels. It moves past its own home and language. This often happens through translation. Translation is when words are changed for new readers.

Long ago, people mostly studied books from Europe. A writer named Goethe helped change this idea. He loved reading poems from Persia and Serbia. He was excited to see his own work in France. Later, scholars like David Damrosch said that moving books is what matters most. He said a book must move into a wider world.

Many people help books travel the globe. Publishers make books to sell. Libraries lend them to people for free. These steps help ideas reach everyone. Today, we can read authors from many lands. We can find stories from dozens of countries in one book. This helps us see how all people are linked. It is a way to share many different voices.
