World economy

society Maturity 13-18 Next article →

The world economy is the system of all human activity on Earth. It includes making things, buying goods, and trading between different nations. This system involves work, managing money, and all kinds of financial deals. Some people look at the economy of one country alone. Others look at how all countries work together as one big group. This global system is tied to the geography of our planet.

Experts use money to measure how much is being produced and used. They often use a special way to compare values called purchasing power. This method helps them see what money can actually buy in different places. It is better than using official exchange rates, which can change a lot. This helps turn different local currencies into one single unit like the US dollar. This makes it easier to see the whole world's activity at once.

History shows us how the leaders of the world economy have changed. Until the middle of the 19th century, China and India led the way. They produced most of the goods that the world used. Then, the Industrial Revolution brought new machines to Western Europe and North America. This shifted the power to the Western Hemisphere. Today, many different countries share the wealth of the world.

Many large countries make up a big part of the global economy today. As of 2025, twelve countries and two groups hold at least 2.0% of the economy. These include places like China, the United States, Japan, and India. Other big parts include the European Union and the African Union. Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, and Russia are also very important. These nations help drive the growth of the whole system.

Wealth is not spread out the same way for everyone. Between 1820 and 2000, the gap between rich and poor grew by almost 50%. This gap was largest around the 1970s. Since then, the gap has been getting smaller. Most people now live in middle-income countries. However, a very small number of people still own a huge amount of wealth. In 2014, the 85 richest people had as much as 3.5 billion people combined.
