Woodworking is the skilled craft of creating items from wood.

This practice includes many specialized disciplines. These include cabinetry, furniture making, wood carving, joinery, carpentry, and woodturning. Woodworking is essential for building structures and household goods. It allows people to transform raw timber into functional or artistic objects. From delicate sculptures to large buildings, wood remains a primary material for human creativity.

Humans have worked with wood for hundreds of thousands of years.

Some of the earliest evidence comes from Kalambo Falls in southern Africa. These shaped sticks feature notches and date back to approximately 476,000 years ago. In Europe, the Clacton spearhead from England is about 400,000 years old. Other significant finds include the Schöningen spears from Germany, which are 300,000 years old. These artifacts show that early humans used flint tools to carve wooden hunting implements. These tools were vital for survival and the development of early civilizations.

Ancient Egypt demonstrated highly advanced woodworking techniques.

Egyptians crafted stools, chairs, tables, beds, and chests. They even created wooden inner coffins for tombs. Their tools were made of copper and later bronze. They utilized mortise and tenon joints to connect pieces of wood. These joints were often strengthened with pegs, dowels, or leather lashings. The Egyptians also invented veneering and used varnishes to finish their work. Because local wood became scarce, they imported cedar and oak from other regions.

Different cultures developed unique woodworking traditions. In ancient China, Lu Ban and his wife Lady Yun are considered the progenitors of the craft. Lu Ban is credited with introducing the plane and the chalk-line. His teachings were recorded in the Lu Ban Jing, a manuscript about building and Feng Shui. Ancient Rome also relied heavily on woodworking for buildings and transportation. The Roman writer Vitruvius wrote extensively about timber in his work, De architectura. In the Bronze and Iron Ages, wood was used for everything from folding chairs to religious idols.

Modern woodworking uses both traditional hands and advanced technology.

Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines allow for mass production. These machines can carve highly detailed shapes into flat stock with great speed. They often produce less waste than manual methods. Additionally, rechargeable power tools have changed the physical demands of the job. They make tasks like boring holes much easier for the worker. However, many people still pursue fine woodworking as a manual craft. Handcrafted furniture remains in demand, though it often costs more than machine-made items.

Woodworkers categorize materials into three main groups.

The first group is hardwoods, which come from angiosperms. These are deciduous trees that shed leaves annually. Hardwoods like ash are dense and stable, with a density around 1041 kg/m3. The second group is softwoods, which come from gymnosperms. These are coniferous, cone-bearing trees that stay green year-round. Softwoods like pine or cedar have a lower density, between 432 and 592 kg/m3. The third group includes man-made materials like plywood and MDF.

Choosing the right wood depends on the specific project requirements.

Hardwoods are often preferred for furniture because they resist warping. They offer a wide variety of colors and grain patterns for artistic expression. Softwoods are frequently used for general construction and framing. For example, western red cedar is a strong, aromatic softwood used for outdoor patios. It can endure wet environments without rotting. Meanwhile, Douglas fir is a common, inexpensive softwood often used when wood will be painted.
