Today, we use new ways to work with wood. We use CNC machines. These are tools that use computers to make shapes. They can make complex designs very fast. Many people still use hand tools. They make unique art and furniture by hand.
There are two main types of wood. Hardwoods come from broadleaf trees. They are heavy and strong. They are great for making tables. Softwoods come from cone-bearing trees. They are often lighter. Many softwoods are used for building houses.

Humans have been working with wood for a very long time. Some shaped sticks found in Africa are 476,000 years old. Early people used stone tools to carve wood into spears. In Germany, very old spears were found from 300,000 years ago. Ancient Egyptians were also very good at woodworking. They made beautiful stools, chairs, and even coffins for tombs. They used copper and bronze tools to do this work.

Different cultures developed unique woodworking traditions. In ancient China, Lu Ban and his wife Lady Yun are considered the progenitors of the craft. Lu Ban is credited with introducing the plane and the chalk-line. His teachings were recorded in the Lu Ban Jing, a manuscript about building and Feng Shui. Ancient Rome also relied heavily on woodworking for buildings and transportation. The Roman writer Vitruvius wrote extensively about timber in his work, De architectura. In the Bronze and Iron Ages, wood was used for everything from folding chairs to religious idols.
Modern woodworking uses both traditional hands and advanced technology.
Woodworkers categorize materials into three main groups.
Choosing the right wood depends on the specific project requirements. Hardwoods are often preferred for furniture because they resist warping. They offer a wide variety of colors and grain patterns for artistic expression. Softwoods are frequently used for general construction and framing. For example, western red cedar is a strong, aromatic softwood used for outdoor patios. It can endure wet environments without rotting. Meanwhile, Douglas fir is a common, inexpensive softwood often used when wood will be painted.
