Wong's martial arts training was a lifelong process of learning. He began studying Hung Ga at age five under his father, Wong Kei-ying. His father was a street performer and medicine peddler. Later, Wong met Lam Fuk-sing in Foshan Town. Lam taught him the use of the sling and Iron Wire Fist. Wong also learned the shadowless kick from Sung Fai-tong. He studied various weapons, including the staff and the southern tiger fork. He even incorporated techniques from drunken boxing, which folklore says So Chan taught him.
