It may come from a South Asian pan called a karahi. Woks are used in many ways to make food. You can use them to boil soup or steam dumplings. You can also use them to fry, roast, or smoke food.

Most woks have a round bottom. This shape lets a spatula scoop food easily. Some woks have flat bottoms for electric stoves. Most woks are made of carbon steel or cast iron. Carbon steel woks are light and heat up fast. Cast iron woks are heavy and stay hot for a long time.

Handles come in two main styles. Loop handles are on both sides. Stick handles are long and stay on one side.

These are often called Peking pans. In Cantonese cooking, there is a special taste called wok hei. This means "breath of the wok." It is a smoky flavor from cooking over a high flame. Chefs toss the food quickly to get this taste. This makes the food smell and taste wonderful.
