Wisdom

philosophy religion Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Wisdom is more than just having a lot of facts in your head. Psychologists describe it as a special mix of wit and virtue. This means using your knowledge and experience to make good choices. It involves balancing what is good for yourself with what is good for others. Some thinkers see wisdom as a part of a person's character. Other people believe it is a way of acting in certain situations.

Many different cultures have ways of explaining how wisdom works. In Ancient Greece, thinkers like Plato made important distinctions. He spoke of sophia, which is wisdom about the divine order of the world. He also talked about phronesis, which is practical wisdom for daily life. There is also episteme, which is formal or scientific knowledge. These ideas help us see how different types of thinking connect.

Religions around the world have shared stories of wisdom for a long time. In the Hebrew Bible, wisdom is called Chokmah and is a very high virtue. King Solomon is a famous example of a wise leader in this tradition. In Buddhism, wisdom is known as prajna and is joined with compassion. This connection is often shown in special art called yab-yum.

Ancient myths also give us names for wisdom. In Egypt, the god Thoth brought wisdom to the nation. In Greek mythology, the goddess Athena was a symbol of wisdom. The Romans had a goddess named Minerva who represented skillful knowledge. People often use an owl as a symbol for her. This is because an owl can see clearly in the dark.

Scientists have studied wisdom deeply since the late 1970s. They look at how people develop new ways of thinking as they grow. Robert J. Sternberg created a theory about how intelligence and creativity work with wisdom. Paul Baltes developed a model called the Berlin Wisdom Paradigm. He saw wisdom as an expert way of understanding life. These studies help us understand how we can all strive to be wiser.
