A wireless network is a way for computers to talk without using any cables.

Instead of wires, these networks use invisible data connections between different points. This is very helpful for homes and big businesses. It allows them to avoid the hard job of installing many expensive cables into buildings. Different types of networks exist for different needs. Some are small, while others cover entire cities or even the whole world.

These connections make it much easier to link equipment in different locations.

Wireless networks work by sending signals through the air using radio waves.

One common way is through a wireless local area network, or WLAN. This links devices over a short distance using an access point. Many people know this technology by the brand name Wi-Fi. Another way is through cellular networks. These divide a large area into smaller parts called cells. Each cell has its own base station to help relay signals. As you move from one area to another, the network hands your connection off to the next cell. This keeps your call or data flowing smoothly.

People have been building these networks for a long time. The first professional wireless network was called ALOHAnet. It was developed at the University of Hawaii in 1969. This network became operational in June 1971. Later, the first commercial wireless network arrived in 1986. It was called the WaveLAN product family and was made by a company named NCR. In 1997, the first version of the Wi-Fi protocol was released. Since then, technology has moved from 2G to 3G, 4G, and even 5G. These new generations allow us to send much more data much faster.

Many different parts and numbers make these networks work.

Engineers use special tools called MOSFETs to build parts like routers and mobile transceivers. These tiny parts help manage the digital signals. Some networks use microwave links that work in the low gigahertz range. These links must have a clear line-of-sight to work. Other networks use satellites stationed in space. These satellites are often in a geosynchronous orbit above the equator. They can receive and send voice, data, and TV signals across the planet. Even space networks exist to help spacecraft talk to each other near Earth.

Wireless technology is part of almost everything we do today.

You might use a wireless personal area network, or WPAN, to connect a headset to a laptop. This uses technologies like Bluetooth or infrared light. We also use wireless networks for emergency services like the police. They help officers communicate effectively when they are working. Businesses use them to share data quickly across an office or a whole city. Whether it is a small device in your hand or a huge satellite in space, wireless networks keep our world connected.
