Churchill's life began in a very grand way in 1874. He was born at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, England. His family was part of the wealthy aristocracy. His father was Lord Randolph Churchill, a member of the Conservative Party. His mother was Jennie, the daughter of an American businessman. As a boy, Churchill went to several different schools. He eventually attended Sandhurst to prepare for a military career.

During the Second Boer War in South Africa, Churchill became very famous. While working as a journalist, he was captured by Boer forces. He was held as a prisoner of war in a camp in Pretoria. Churchill escaped by hiding on freight trains and in a mine. He eventually reached safety in Portuguese East Africa. After this, he was elected as a Conservative MP in 1900 at age 25. He later switched to the Liberal Party in 1904.

Churchill held many high-ranking government positions over several decades. He served as President of the Board of Trade and as Home Secretary. As Home Secretary, he supported prison reform and social security for workers. During the First World War, he was the First Lord of the Admiralty. He oversaw the naval attack on the Dardanelles, which was a disaster. Because of this, he was demoted and later resigned from the government. In 1917, he returned to serve in several different ministerial roles.

In the 1930s, Churchill was out of government during his "wilderness years."

During this time, he warned that Nazi Germany was becoming a military threat. He called for rearmament to prepare for war. When the Second World War began, he was re-appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. In May 1940, he succeeded Neville Chamberlain as Prime Minister. He led a national government to fight the Axis powers. This effort resulted in an Allied victory in 1945.

Churchill's influence continued even after the war ended. He served as the Leader of the Opposition after the 1945 election. He famously warned about an "iron curtain" of Soviet influence in Europe. This was part of the early Cold War period. He also promoted the idea of European unity. In 1953, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his writing.
