He served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during two different periods. His first term lasted from 1940 to 1945 during the Second World War. He returned to office from 1951 to 1955. For 62 years, he worked as a Member of Parliament (MP). He represented five different constituencies throughout his long political career. Churchill is remembered as a leader who defended liberal democracy against fascism.

Churchill was born on November 30, 1874, at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire.

He belonged to the wealthy and aristocratic Spencer family. His father, Lord Randolph Churchill, was a Conservative MP. His mother, Jennie, was the daughter of an American businessman. Churchill attended several schools, including Harrow and Sandhurst. He joined the British Army in 1895 as a second lieutenant.

Before entering politics, Churchill saw action in many different places. He traveled to Cuba to observe the War of Independence. He also served in India for 19 months. While in India, he practiced self-education by reading many books. He studied authors like Charles Darwin and Plato.

He also worked as a war correspondent for newspapers. This writing became a lifelong habit for him. He even used writing to help manage his recurring depression, which he called his "black dog."

During the Second Boer War in South Africa, Churchill became very famous.

While working as a journalist, he was captured by Boer forces. He was held as a prisoner of war in a camp in Pretoria. Churchill escaped by hiding on freight trains and in a mine. He eventually reached safety in Portuguese East Africa. After this, he was elected as a Conservative MP in 1900 at age 25. He later switched to the Liberal Party in 1904.

Churchill held many high-ranking government positions over several decades. He served as President of the Board of Trade and as Home Secretary. As Home Secretary, he supported prison reform and social security for workers. During the First World War, he was the First Lord of the Admiralty. He oversaw the naval attack on the Dardanelles, which was a disaster. Because of this, he was demoted and later resigned from the government. In 1917, he returned to serve in several different ministerial roles.

In the 1930s, Churchill was out of government during his "wilderness years."

When the Second World War began, he was re-appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. In May 1940, he succeeded Neville Chamberlain as Prime Minister. He led a national government to fight the Axis powers. This effort resulted in an Allied victory in 1945.

Churchill's influence continued even after the war ended. He served as the Leader of the Opposition after the 1945 election. He famously warned about an "iron curtain" of Soviet influence in Europe. This was part of the early Cold War period. He also promoted the idea of European unity. In 1953, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his writing.
