Asquith rose quickly through the ranks of the Liberal Party. 
His leadership was tested by the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914. 
As the war progressed, Asquith's position became increasingly weak. He attempted to form a coalition government with the Conservative and Labour parties in early 1915. He struggled with difficult decisions regarding conscription and war financing. Because of these challenges, he was forced to resign in December 1916. He was replaced by David Lloyd George. The two men became bitter enemies as they fought for control of the Liberal Party. Asquith's term as Prime Minister lasted more than eight consecutive years. This was the longest continuous term for any Prime Minister between 1827 and 1979.
