Winifred Edgerton Merrill was a great math thinker. She was born in Ripon, Wisconsin, in 1862. Her parents built her a small home observatory. This is a place to look at the stars. Winifred loved the sky. She used math to study a comet in 1883.

She went to Columbia University to study math. At that time, the school was only for men. She wanted to earn a PhD, which is the highest degree. The school leaders said no at first. Winifred did not stop. She spoke to the leaders one by one. In 1886, they gave her the degree with high honors. The male students cheered for her for two minutes.

Winifred was the first American woman to get a PhD in math. She also taught math for many years. Later, she started a school for girls. This was the Oaksmere School. She also worked as a librarian in New York City. A portrait of her hangs at Columbia. It says, "She opened the door."
