Paley had a special talent for knowing what people wanted to hear. This helped him grow his company into a huge communication empire. He changed how broadcasting worked for everyone.

Paley changed the way radio stations made money. Before him, most people thought of stations as local outlets like newspapers. Paley saw that good shows could attract many listeners at once. He provided shows to many different stations for a very low cost. This meant more people could hear the same programs. Because so many people were listening, advertisers were willing to pay more money. This new way of working helped the network and the local stations grow together.

Paley's career began with a family business. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 28, 1901. His father, Samuel Paley, ran a successful cigar company. In 1927, the family bought a struggling radio network in Philadelphia. This network had only 16 stations at the time. Under William's leadership, the family's cigar sales more than doubled. By 1928, the Paley family owned most of the network. Within ten years, Paley had grown the network to 114 stations.

As the world changed, Paley expanded what CBS could do. During the late 1930s, he built a strong news division. He knew people wanted to hear news about the coming war in Europe. He also worked to connect people in different countries. He helped create a chain of 64 stations in 18 different countries. This was called La Cadena de las Americas. In 1943, the Cuban government gave him an award for this work.

Later, CBS became a leader in television. Paley helped the network grow during the big boom of TV sets in the 1950s. He had many different opinions about the shows on his network. For example, he was a big fan of the show Gunsmoke. He even helped make sure that show stayed on the air. Paley also collected many famous paintings by artists like Picasso and Matisse. Some of these beautiful works are now in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
