William Fox was a very important leader in the early movie business.

He was born in Tolcsva, Hungary, in 1879. His family moved to New York City when he was only nine months old. His parents were named Michael Fuchs and Anna Fried. Growing up, William worked hard to help his family make money. He sold newspapers and candy in Central Park. He also worked in the garment industry. When he was eight, he fell off an ice truck. This accident broke his arm and left him with a permanent injury.

William was a person who loved to build and grow businesses.

He started his own company in 1900. By 1904, he bought his first nickelodeon, which was a small movie theater. Instead of just making films, he focused on building large theater chains. He bought films from many companies like Pathé and Vitagraph to show in his theaters. In 1914, he formed the Fox Film Corporation. He used money from banks and families in New Jersey to help him grow. His first film studio was located in Fort Lee, New Jersey.

His companies became very successful during the early 1900s.

Between 1915 and 1919, his films made millions of dollars. He worked with famous stars like Theda Bara and the Western actor Tom Mix. One of his biggest achievements was helping bring sound to movies. He used the Tri-Ergon system and the work of Theodore Case. This created the Fox Movietone sound-on-film system in 1927. This system helped make movies much more exciting to watch. His newsreel series, Fox Movietone News, became very popular in the United States.

Later in life, William Fox faced many difficult and hard times.

In 1929, he was badly hurt in a car accident. Around the same time, the stock market crashed. This crash took away almost all of his money. He also tried to buy a large company called MGM. This led to a legal fight with the government. Because of these many problems, he lost control of his companies in 1930. He spent many years in a legal battle to avoid losing everything. He even served a short time in prison for his actions during this time.

Even though he lost his businesses, his name is still very famous today.

In 1935, his company merged to become Twentieth Century-Fox. Many people know the name because of the Walt Disney Company. His name is also used by the Fox Corporation. This includes groups like Fox News and Fox Sports. William Fox died in 1952 at the age of 73. He had built many grand Fox Theatres in cities like San Francisco and Detroit. His work helped change how the whole world watches movies.
