Fargo's career started with small jobs. He left school at age 13 to carry mail for his village. Later, he worked as a clerk and a messenger. In 1845, he helped start a company called Western Express. This company moved things from Buffalo to places like St. Louis and Chicago. At that time, there were no railroads in the West. So, the company used steamboats and wagons to move goods.

Fargo was born on May 20, 1818, in Pompey, New York. He was the oldest of twelve children. His father, William C. Fargo, fought in the War of 1812. His family had a long history in America. His great-grandfather's family originally came from France.

Fargo worked very hard to support his family from a young age. He eventually moved from small jobs to leading very large businesses.

In 1852, Fargo and Henry Wells started Wells Fargo & Co. This happened because other leaders did not want to work in California. The company helped people during the gold rush. They moved gold and other valuable things very quickly. They also provided banking services like selling paper bank drafts.
