He has achieved massive success in both the music and film industries. His films have grossed more than $10 billion at theaters worldwide. This high level of success makes him one of Hollywood's most bankable stars. His career is marked by many prestigious accolades. These include an Academy Award and four Grammy Awards. He has also received a Golden Globe Award and a BAFTA Award.

Smith's musical journey began in Philadelphia, where he was born on September 25, 1968. He grew up in the Wynnefield neighborhood. His mother, Caroline, was a school board administrator. His father, Willard Carroll Smith Sr., was a U.S. Air Force veteran. Smith began rapping at the age of 12. A significant moment occurred when his grandmother found his lyric notebook. He first gained recognition as part of a hip hop duo. He worked with his childhood friend, Jeffrey "DJ Jazzy Jeff" Townes. They were known as DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince. The duo met by chance in 1985 at a house party. Townes was a turntablist and producer who needed a hype man. They released five studio albums together between 1985 and 1994. Their music included five US Billboard Hot 100-top 20 singles. These tracks included "Summertime" and "Parents Just Don't Understand." The group won the first Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance in 1989.

Smith eventually transitioned into a highly successful solo music career. He released several solo albums, including Big Willie Style in 1997 and Willennium in 1999. His solo singles "Gettin' Jiggy wit It" and "Wild Wild West" both reached number one in the United States. His debut solo album, Big Willie Style, was certified nine times platinum by the RIAA. He also released the album Born to Reign in 2002 and Lost and Found in 2005. His most recent studio album is titled Based on a True Story, released in 2025.
