James Todd Smith, known professionally as LL Cool J, is a highly influential American rapper and actor. His stage name is an abbreviation for "Ladies Love Cool James," a title coined by his friend Mikey D. He stands as one of the earliest hip-hop artists to achieve massive commercial success. This success occurred alongside other "new-school" acts like Run-DMC. LL Cool J helped bridge the gap between underground hip-hop and mainstream popularity. He is recognized for his ability to perform both hard-hitting rap and smooth R&B.

Smith's journey into music began in his youth in Queens, New York. He started rapping at the age of ten, inspired by the group The Treacherous Three. His family provided the essential tools for his early development. His grandfather, a jazz saxophonist, purchased $2,000 worth of equipment for him. This kit included two turntables, an audio mixer, and an amplifier. His mother also supported his talent by purchasing a Korg drum machine. Using his mixer, Smith produced demo tapes in his grandparents' home. He sent these recordings to various companies across New York City.

In 1984, Smith signed with Def Jam Recordings, a label founded by Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons. His professional breakthrough came with the single "I Need a Beat." This track was a "b-boy" song, which means it featured spare beats and ballistic rhymes designed for dancers. The single sold over 100,000 copies and established both the artist and the label. His debut concert took place at Manhattan Center High School. During this performance, he worked with his DJ, Cut Creator. The enthusiastic reaction from the audience convinced him to pursue music professionally.

His debut studio album, Radio, was released in November 1985. The album was noted for its production innovation and powerful rapping. Rick Rubin used a minimalist production style, often described as "reduced" on the album credits. This stripped-down, gritty sound had a major impact on future hip-hop production. Radio was a significant commercial success, selling over 500,000 copies in its first five months. By 1988, the RIAA reported it had sold over one million copies. It eventually reached 1,500,000 copies sold in the United States.

Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, LL Cool J released several landmark albums. His 1987 album, Bigger and Deffer, sold more than two million copies in the U.S. alone. It featured the hit "I Need Love," which was his first number one R&B and Top 40 hit. In 1990, he released Mama Said Knock You Out, which earned him a Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance in 1992. This album proved his ability to remain a hard-edged artist despite criticisms of being too commercial. His 1995 album, Mr. Smith, also saw great success, selling over two million copies. It included the Grammy-winning single "Hey Lover."

Beyond his musical achievements, Smith has maintained a prolific career in acting. He has appeared in various films, including Toys, Deep Blue Sea, and S.W.A.T. From 2009 to 2023, he was a central figure on the CBS television series NCIS: Los Angeles. In this role, he played Special Agent Sam Hanna. He also appeared in related series such as NCIS: Hawaiʻi and the original NCIS. Additionally, he served as the host for the Paramount Network show Lip Sync Battle. His ability to move between music and television has made him a versatile entertainer.

LL Cool J's cultural impact is reflected in numerous prestigious honors. In 2010, VH1 included him on their "100 Greatest Artists Of All Time" list. In 2017, he became the first rapper to receive the Kennedy Center Honors. He was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021 within the Musical Excellence category. These accolades highlight his role in elevating hip-hop to a global art form. Even in 2024, he continues to release new music, such as his fourteenth album, The FORCE. His career serves as a timeline for the evolution of modern hip-hop culture.
