It is a place of vast, flat desert land. This land is very empty of people. It is the least crowded place in Africa. In fact, it is the second least crowded place in the whole world. Only about 600,000 people live there.

This territory is known as Africa's last colony. This is because it has not yet achieved full independence.

Long ago, many different groups lived in this region. The Gaetuli were among the earliest known inhabitants. Later, Berber and Arab tribes moved through the area. These groups mixed together over hundreds of years. This mixing created a culture that is unique to this part of North Africa. The land was also used for trade. Caravans once traveled along paths between Marrakesh and Tombouctou.

Spain ruled the area for a long time. They were there from 1884 until 1975. At first, they used the coast for fishing. Later, they controlled the land as a colony. In 1934, they divided the area into two parts. These parts were named after rivers. One was called Saguía el-Hamra. The other was called Río de Oro.

Things changed quickly when Spain left in 1975. Morocco and Mauritania both claimed the land. A group called the Polisario Front fought for independence. They formed a government called the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. This government lives in exile in Tindouf, Algeria.

Today, the land is split into two parts. Morocco controls about 70% of the territory. The Polisario Front controls about 30%.

Morocco even built a long wall lined with land mines to mark its area.

The United Nations wants to help settle this. They want to hold a vote called a referendum. This vote would let the people choose their own future. They could choose to be independent or join Morocco. However, this plan has stalled for a long time. The two sides cannot agree on who is allowed to vote.

Because of this, many Sahrawi people still live in refugee camps in Algeria.
