Western Europe is a large region in the western part of the continent of Europe.

It sits right next to the Atlantic Ocean on its western side. Different groups of people use different names to describe where this region begins and ends. For example, the United Nations lists countries like Austria, Belgium, France, and Germany in this group.

The CIA uses a slightly different list for its records. Some groups also include countries like Spain and Portugal in the area. These different ways of grouping help scientists and leaders organize information about the world.

The weather in Western Europe changes depending on where you stand. In the south, the climate is Mediterranean, which means it is often warm and dry.

If you travel to the Pyrenees or the Alps, the weather becomes alpine. This means it is much colder in those high mountains. The northwestern parts of the region have a mild and humid climate. This wet weather is caused by the North Atlantic Current. Lately, the region has become a hotspot for heatwaves. These heatwaves are growing much faster than in other parts of the world.

History has shaped how people see the West for a long time. In the past, the Roman Empire divided the land into different parts. The western side used the Latin language, while the eastern side used Greek.

Later, the Christian church split during the Schism of 1054. This event separated Western Christianity from Eastern Christianity. Religion remains a big part of the culture today. A 2018 study found that 71% of people in the region identify as Christian. This includes both Catholic and Protestant groups.

During the Cold War, the region was divided for 46 years. An invisible line called the Iron Curtain separated the West from the East.

The Western Bloc was led by the United States and its allies in NATO. The Eastern Bloc was led by the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact. This division lasted from 1945 until 1991. The world changed when the Iron Curtain fell in 1989. After this, West Germany and East Germany joined together as one country. Many other countries also gained their full independence during this time.

Many different languages are spoken across Western Europe today. Most of these belong to two main families. The Romance languages come from the Latin of the Roman Empire. The Germanic languages come from a group called Proto-Germanic. You can hear these in places like France, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. There are also special groups like the Celtic languages.

Some languages, like Basque, are very unique because they are not related to any others. Today, many countries work to protect these smaller regional languages.
