Western Europe is a major region located in the western part of the European continent.

The region's exact boundaries often change depending on who is describing it. For instance, the United Nations uses a specific system called a geoscheme to group countries for statistics. This system includes nations such as Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.

Other organizations, like the CIA, use different lists for their own records. The CIA classifies seven countries as Western Europe, including the United Kingdom and Ireland. Some groups also include countries in Southwestern Europe, such as Spain and Portugal. On its western edge, the region meets the vast Atlantic Ocean.

The concept of "the West" has a very long history. Originally, it was used to describe the western half of the ancient Mediterranean world. It referred to the Latin West of the Roman Empire and the area of Western Christendom. During the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery, starting around the 15th century, the term began to change. People started using "Europe" as a name for the West rather than just calling it "Christendom." Later, during the Age of Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution, the specific terms "Eastern Europe" and "Western Europe" became more common. In East Asia, the region was once known as the "Far West" in China and Japan. The Italian priest Matteo Ricci was among the first to use this term in China.

Religious history has played a massive role in defining the region. Christianity is currently the largest religion in Western Europe. A 2018 study by the Pew Research Center found that 71.0% of Western Europeans identify as Christian. Much of this identity was shaped by the Great Schism of 1054. This event divided Christianity into Western Christianity and Eastern Christianity.

As a result, Western Europe became primarily associated with the Catholic Church. Later, the Reformation in the 16th century introduced Protestantism as another major denomination. This added even more religious variety to the Western landscape.

Political divisions were most intense during the Cold War era. For 46 years, from 1945 to 1991, Europe was split by the Iron Curtain.

This division separated the Western Bloc from the Eastern Bloc. The Western Bloc was led by the United States and the NATO alliance. The Eastern Bloc was led by the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact. While some countries remained officially neutral, they were often grouped by their political or economic systems. This era ended dramatically when the Iron Curtain fell in 1989. Following this, West Germany peacefully merged with East Germany during German reunification. By 1991, the Soviet Union ceased to exist, and many countries regained their independence.

Language is another way to understand the diversity of the region. Most Western European languages belong to two large Indo-European families. The Romance languages, such as French, descended from the Latin used in the Roman Empire. The Germanic languages, such as English and Dutch, come from an ancestor called Proto-Germanic. There are also unique groups like the Celtic languages, which include Irish and Welsh. One very special language is Basque, which is a language isolate. This means it is not related to any other living language. Today, many political groups work to protect these minority and regional languages.

The climate in Western Europe varies significantly based on geography. In the southern parts, such as the coasts of Portugal and Spain, the climate is Mediterranean. This means the weather is generally warm and dry.

In the Pyrenees and the Alps, the climate is alpine, which is much colder. The northwestern parts of the region experience a mild and humid climate. This is caused by the influence of the North Atlantic Current. However, the region is also becoming a hotspot for heatwaves. These heatwaves are increasing at a rate three to four times faster than in other northern midlatitudes.

Modern organizations continue to manage the region's interests through various groups. The Western European Union was established in 1954 following the Paris Conference. It was formed by countries like Belgium, France, and the United Kingdom to encourage cooperation.

This organization eventually became defunct in 2011 after the Treaty of Lisbon. Another important group is the Western European and Others Group. This is an unofficial group used by the United Nations for voting and negotiations. It includes many European nations alongside countries like Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.
