West Nile fever is an illness caused by a germ called a virus.

Most people who get it do not feel sick. About 80% of people have no symptoms at all. About 20% of people might feel unwell. They may have a fever, a headache, or a rash.

Mosquitoes spread the virus.

The virus usually lives in birds. A mosquito bites an infected bird and picks up the virus. Then the mosquito bites a person or a horse. People and horses are called dead-end hosts. This means the virus does not grow well in them. It is hard for a new mosquito to catch the virus from a person.

Very few people get very sick. Less than 1% of people have the virus move to their central nervous system. This is the part of the body that controls the brain and nerves. This can cause a stiff neck or confusion. It can even cause paralysis, which means being unable to move.

You can stay safe by avoiding mosquito bites. Use insect spray or window screens. You can also empty pools of standing water. This helps stop mosquitoes from growing.
