International relations changed significantly during the 16th century. To defend against the rising Sultanate of Demak, the Sunda Kingdom signed the Luso-Sundanese Treaty in 1512. This was an agreement with the Portuguese. In exchange, the Portuguese gained rights to build fortresses and warehouses. They also established trading agreements with the kingdom. A Padrao stone monument was placed by the Ciliwung River in 1522 to mark this treaty. However, the alliance could not be fully realized. The port of Sunda Kalapa was conquered by the Sultanates of Demak and Cirebon in 1524.

Following the fall of the Sultanate of Banten, European influence grew. Dutch and British trading companies established ships in western Java during the 16th century. For the next three hundred years, the area fell under the Dutch East Indies administration. West Java was officially re-established as an Indonesian province on 14 July 1950. The province has undergone several administrative changes since then. In 1960, Jakarta was split off as a special capital region. Later, in 2000, Banten was separated to become its own province.

West Java is currently the most populous province in Indonesia. The 2020 Census recorded 48,274,162 residents. By mid-2025, official estimates showed the population grew to 50,759,003. The population increases by roughly 400,000 people every year. This growth is very high in the northwest corner. This area is part of the Jakarta metropolitan area, known as the Bodebek region.
