He is recognized as a pioneer of New German Cinema, a movement of filmmakers who worked with low budgets. His work often explores ambitious protagonists who pursue impossible dreams. These characters frequently find themselves in intense conflict with the forces of nature. Herzog is also a prolific director of operas and a published author of over 12 books. His creative vision is so distinct that critics have called him one of the most important directors alive.

Herzog utilizes a unique and demanding filmmaking process. He avoids using storyboards, which are drawings used to plan every shot in advance. Instead, he emphasizes improvisation to allow for spontaneous moments. He often places his cast and crew into real, difficult situations that mirror the struggles of the characters. This method helps create a sense of mysticism and realism. Furthermore, he frequently casts professional actors alongside local people from the filming location. This blend of talent helps ground his films in their specific environments.

His early life was marked by significant hardship and isolation. Herzog was born in Munich in 1942 during World War II. As a young child, his family lived in the remote Bavarian village of Sachrang. Growing up in the Chiemgau Alps, he lived without running water, telephones, or flushing toilets. He did not even know cinema existed until a traveling projectionist visited his school. At age 12, he developed a lifelong fascination with cave paintings. To begin his career, he famously took a 35 mm camera from the Munich Film School. He viewed this not as theft, but as a necessity to acquire the tools for his craft.

Herzog's career is defined by intense collaborations and dramatic events. He had a famous and tumultuous relationship with actor Klaus Kinski. Together, they created several notable films, including *Aguirre, the Wrath of God* (1972) and *Fitzcarraldo* (1982). In 1971, Herzog narrowly avoided a tragedy when his travel plans changed at the last minute. He was supposed to be on LANSA Flight 508, which was struck by lightning and disintegrated. He later explored this event in his 1998 documentary, *Wings of Hope*.

His professional achievements include numerous prestigious international awards. He has received recognition from the Cannes Film Festival, the Berlin International Film Festival, and the Venice Film Festival. For his film *Fitzcarraldo*, he won the Best Director award at Cannes in 1982. His film *The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser* won the Grand Prix Spécial du Jury in 1975. Herzog has also earned nominations for an Academy Award, a BAFTA, and an Emmy. In 2009, *Time* magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Beyond traditional filmmaking, Herzog is known for his eccentric and determined personality. In 1978, he fulfilled a promise to eat his own shoe to motivate a fellow filmmaker. This act was recorded in the short documentary *Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe*. He also demonstrated immense physical endurance when he walked from Munich to Paris. He undertook this three-week journey in 1974 to visit a mentor, Lotte H. Eisner, who was gravely ill. These actions reflect his belief in the necessity of seeing projects through to completion.

Herzog's influence extends into popular culture through various acting roles. He often appears on screen as a fictionalized version of himself. Audiences may recognize him from animated series like *The Simpsons* and *Rick and Morty*. He has also appeared in live-action shows such as *The Mandalorian* and *Parks and Recreation*.
