His birthplace was Sopot, located in the Free City of Danzig. Due to the Great Depression, his family moved to Berlin in 1931. During World War II, Kinski was conscripted into the Wehrmacht at age 17. In 1944, he was captured by the British Army in the Netherlands. While held in a prisoner-of-war camp in England, he began his acting career. He performed in variety shows designed to maintain morale among the prisoners.

Kinski's professional reputation was often defined by his difficult temperament. He was known for emotional and sometimes violent outbursts on film sets. These outbursts were often directed at his fellow actors or his directors. His behavior was complicated by a history of mental illness. In 1950, he was hospitalized in West Berlin after an incident involving a theatrical sponsor. Doctors provided a preliminary diagnosis of schizophrenia, but eventually concluded he had psychopathy, which is an antisocial personality disorder. This unpredictable behavior led to him being fired from the Schlosspark-Theater in Berlin in 1947.

His most significant professional partnership was with the director Werner Herzog. Together, they created five major films between 1972 and 1987.

These films included *Aguirre, the Wrath of God*, *Nosferatu the Vampyre*, *Woyzeck*, *Fitzcarraldo*, and *Cobra Verde*. Their working relationship was famously contentious and full of conflict. Herzog once described Kinski as one of the greatest actors of the century, but also as a "monster." The two men had many intense arguments during production. Herzog even threatened Kinski with a gun on the set of *Aguirre, the Wrath of God*.

Kinski's personal life involved multiple marriages and complex family dynamics. He was married three times during his life. His first marriage to Gislinde Kühlbeck produced his daughter, Pola. His second marriage to Ruth Brigitte Tocki produced his daughter, Nastassja. His third marriage to Minhoi Geneviève Loanic resulted in his son, Nikolai. After his death, his daughters shared difficult accounts of their childhoods. Pola Kinski published an autobiography claiming she had been sexually abused by her father. Her sister Nastassja also described him as an unpredictable tyrant who made her feel afraid.

Kinski died on 23 November 1991, at the age of 65. He suffered a sudden heart attack at his home in Lagunitas, California. Following his death, his body was cremated and his ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean. His legacy remains a subject of intense study in cinema. Directors and biographers continue to examine his massive, if controversial, output. His life serves as a study of the intersection between extreme artistic talent and mental instability.
