A dictionary is a book that explains words. Many people call them "Webster's." This name comes from Noah Webster. He was a man who studied language. He wanted to help people in America.

Noah Webster spent many years on his work. He wrote a big book in 1828. It had 70,000 entries. This was much more than other books. He chose simple ways to spell words. He used "center" instead of "centre." He used "color" instead of "colour." These choices helped shape American English.

Some people did not like his ideas at first. But his work became very famous. The poet Emily Dickinson even used his book. She said it was her only companion.

Later, a company called Merriam took over his work. They made new and larger books. One version in 1864 was called the Unabridged edition. It had 114,000 entries. It became famous all over the world.
