"Wannabe" is a famous dance-pop song by the British group, the Spice Girls.

It was released as their first single on 26 June 1996. The song is very important because it shows the group's "Girl Power" philosophy. Instead of being a typical love song, the lyrics focus on female friendship. They tell listeners that being a good friend is more important than romantic relationships. This message made the song a symbol of female empowerment for many people.

Making the song was a very fast and creative event. The group worked with producers Matt Rowe and Richard "Biff" Stannard. They used a "cut-and-paste" method to build the track. This meant they recorded different parts like chanting, rapping, and singing separately. Then, they sewed those pieces together into one song. The whole process took only about 30 minutes because the group had ideas ready. During this "creative frenzy," they even made up a silly word: "zigazig-ah."

The Spice Girls formed after an advertisement was placed in 1994. A team called Heart Management looked for people who were ambitious and could sing. They found five girls, though one member, Michelle Stephenson, was replaced by Emma Bunton. The group was first called "Touch" before changing their name to "Spice." They eventually moved to a house in Maidenhead to practice. Later, they met manager Simon Fuller and signed with Virgin Records in July 1996. This helped them prepare for their big debut.

"Wannabe" became a massive success all over the world. It topped the UK Singles Chart for seven weeks. The song also reached number one in 22 nations by the end of 1996. By the end of 1997, it had topped the charts in 37 different countries. It earned a quadruple platinum certification from the BPI. The song even won awards at the 1997 Brit Awards and the Ivor Novello Awards. It is known as the best-selling single by a girl group.

Even though it was made a long time ago, the song is still famous. A study in 2014 found it was the most recognizable pop song of the last 60 years for young English speakers. The song's energy comes from a fast rhythm and a bright piano sound. It uses a mix of singing and rapping to show each girl's personality. The group even released a special version called "Wannabe 25" in 2021. This celebrated the 25th anniversary of their famous hit.
