It came out in 1996. The song is about the power of friendship. The lyrics say that being a good friend is more important than romance. This idea is part of their "Girl Power" spirit.

The song was made very fast. The group and their producers finished it in about 30 minutes. They used a "cut-and-paste" way to join different parts together. They added chanting, rapping, and singing. The girls even made up a silly word: "zigazig-ah."

At first, the record label wanted a different song. But the girls insisted on "Wannabe." They felt it showed who they really were. They were right! The song was a huge hit. It topped the charts in 37 different countries. It even became the best-selling single by a girl group. One study found it is a very famous song for young people. It won many awards, like the Brit Award for British Single of the Year.
