He was a master of many different crafts. He wrote over 75 plays and many short stories. He also wrote poems and lyrics that were very funny. Gilbert was known for a unique "topsy-turvy" style. This meant he liked to make the world seem upside down.

His silly drawings and poems were called the Bab Ballads. These works helped him become a well-known name in London.

Gilbert worked in many ways before he became a star. He first worked as a clerk in a government office. He did not like that job very much. Later, he tried being a lawyer, but he only had a few clients each year.

To earn money, he wrote reviews and stories for magazines. He even worked as a war correspondent in France. He also served as a captain in the Militia for many years. These different jobs helped him learn about many parts of life.

His most famous work came from a partnership with a composer.

Even though he won the legal fight, it hurt his friendship with Sullivan. He was later made a knight in 1907.

Gilbert's ideas changed the way people make theatre today.

His clever writing inspired other famous writers like Oscar Wilde. His comic operas also helped lead to the style of American Broadway shows. People still perform his plays all over the English-speaking world. Even though he passed away in 1911, his funny stories live on. He showed the world that being silly can be a great art form.
