Gilbert and Sullivan

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Gilbert and Sullivan were a famous creative team from the Victorian era.

They worked together to create fourteen comic operas between 1871 and 1896. These shows are funny plays that feature lots of singing. W. S. Gilbert wrote the libretti, which are the words for the songs and plays. He was known for creating "topsy-turvy" worlds. In these worlds, silly or strange ideas are treated as if they are completely normal. For example, pirates might become noblemen or fairies might meet British lords.

Arthur Sullivan was the composer who wrote the music for these stories.

He was six years younger than Gilbert. Sullivan had a great talent for writing melodies that felt both funny and sad. He grew up in London and learned to play many different instruments. By age eight, he could play every instrument in his father's military band. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music and in Leipzig. His music helped bring a special feeling to the funny stories Gilbert wrote.

The two men first worked together on a show called "Thespis" in 1871.

This show was an extravaganza that featured Greek gods. It was a big success and ran for 63 performances. After this, the two men worked on their own for a few years. Gilbert wrote many poems called the "Bab Ballads" during this time.

Sullivan also composed many other pieces, including the famous hymn "Onward, Christian Soldiers" in 1872.

In 1874, a producer named Richard D'Oyly Carte helped bring them back together.

He suggested they work on a short opera called "Trial by Jury." This show was a funny look at the legal system. It became a runaway hit and was very popular. Carte later built the Savoy Theatre in 1881 just for their shows.

He also started the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company to perform their work. This company kept their operas alive for more than one hundred years.
