Vytautas the Great was a famous ruler of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
Vytautas had to work very hard to gain and keep his power. Early in his life, there was a struggle between his family members. His father, Kęstutis, and his uncle, Algirdas, had ruled together. After Algirdas died, his son Jogaila took over. This led to many difficult fights for control. Vytautas even had to escape from Kreva Castle to find help.
His rule helped the Grand Duchy of Lithuania grow very large. At one point, the land stretched from the Baltic Sea all the way to the Black Sea.

One of the biggest parts of his life was fighting the Teutonic Knights. These knights wanted to control the land of Samogitia. In 1410, Vytautas led a huge army at the Battle of Grunwald. He joined his forces with the Polish army for this fight. It was a very big victory for Lithuania and Poland. This win made their lands known as a great power in Europe.
Vytautas also helped create new ways for his country to work with Poland. He helped make the Union of Vilnius and Radom in 1401. This agreement allowed Lithuania to keep its own leaders and its own parliament. He also helped create the Union of Horodło in 1413. These unions helped the two lands work together on important matters. His work helped shape how people lived and ruled for a long time. He remained a formal Grand Duke for the rest of his life.
Vytautas the Great was a powerful ruler of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
Vytautas's rise to power began with a complicated family struggle. His uncle, Algirdas, had ruled Lithuania alongside Vytautas's father, Kęstutis. When Algirdas died in 1377, his son Jogaila took control. This led to a period of conflict starting in 1377. In 1381, Kęstutis seized Vilnius and imprisoned Jogaila. However, Jogaila escaped and raised an army. During this time, Kęstutis and Vytautas were arrested and taken to Kreva Castle.
To regain power, Vytautas made many strategic alliances. He escaped Kreva in 1382 and sought help from the Teutonic Order. The Order was a group of military knights. Vytautas was even baptized as a Catholic, receiving the name Wigand. He frequently changed sides to protect his interests. In 1384, he broke with the Order to reconcile with Jogaila. He then regained most of his father's lands. By 1401, the Vilnius-Radom agreement recognized him as the formal Grand Duke for life.
Under Vytautas, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania expanded to an enormous size. He pursued a policy to control Ruthenian lands in the east. He reached an agreement with Tokhtamysh, the Khan of the Golden Horde. This helped Lithuania gain more territory. In 1398, Vytautas's army even attacked the Crimea and built a castle there.
Much of Vytautas's military focus was on the Teutonic Knights. The knights wanted to control Samogitia to connect their lands in Prussia and Latvia. This led to several uprisings and treaties. In 1410, Vytautas commanded the Lithuanian forces at the Battle of Grunwald. He joined his army with Polish forces to fight the knights. The battle resulted in a decisive victory for Poland and Lithuania. This victory meant the Teutonic Knights were no longer a major threat.
Diplomacy was also a major part of Vytautas's leadership. After the victory at Grunwald, he dealt with ongoing border disputes. The Peace of Thorn in 1411 gave Samogitia to Vytautas for his lifetime. Later, the Treaty of Lake Melno in 1422 returned Samogitia to Lithuania permanently. This treaty established a border that remained stable for about 500 years. He also worked to manage the relationship between Lithuania and Poland. He helped create the Union of Horodło in 1413 to define how the two nations would interact.
Vytautas's work helped create lasting political structures. The Union of Vilnius and Radom in 1401 gave Lithuania wide autonomy. This meant Lithuania could keep its own leaders and parliament. The Union of Horodło allowed the two nations to discuss important matters jointly through their Sejms, or parliaments. These unions ensured that Lithuania remained a distinct and powerful entity within the larger Polish-Lithuanian system. His reign changed the political map of Europe for centuries.
