Historians are still studying how Gediminas became a leader. Because written records from that time are hard to find, his early life is a bit of a mystery. Some old stories claim he was a servant who took the throne. Other stories say he was the son of a previous leader named Vytenis. Recent research suggests he might have been related to a man named Skalmantas. Scholars use old poems to try and piece these family trees together.

Being a leader was a hard job because he had many different people to lead. He ruled over pagans, Orthodox Christians, and Catholics.

Historians still debate the exact origins of Gediminas. Written records from the 14th century are very scarce. Some old chronicles from the Teutonic Knights claimed he was a hostler for Grand Duke Vytenis. These sources suggested he took the throne by force. Other Lithuanian chronicles claimed he was the son of Vytenis. However, the two men were nearly the same age, making a father-son relationship unlikely. Recent research suggests he might have been descended from a man named Skalmantas. This idea comes from a 14th-century poem called Zadonshchina.

Managing a large empire required complex diplomacy. Gediminas faced constant threats from the Teutonic Knights and the Livonian Order. These groups wanted to conquer Lithuanian lands under the reason of spreading Christianity. To protect his realm, Gediminas engaged in negotiations with the Holy See. In 1322, he wrote letters to Pope John XXII. He asked for protection against the knights. He even invited papal legates to Lithuania to discuss baptism.

He also issued circular letters to Hanseatic towns. He promised that nobles, knights, and farmers could live in his lands under their own laws. He even invited priests and monks to build churches in Vilnius and Navahrudak.

Despite these promises, Gediminas faced many religious challenges. He ruled over a diverse population of pagans, Orthodox Christians, and Catholics. He used religion as a diplomatic tool to gain support from Catholic powers. However, he remained a pagan himself to avoid upsetting his core subjects. The pagans in Žemaitija and Aukštaitija threatened him if he converted. He also had to balance the needs of his Orthodox subjects in Belarus. To protect his native religion, he punished those who tried to convert pagans. In 1339 or 1340, he executed two Franciscan friars for preaching against Lithuanian beliefs.

Gediminas was also a successful military conqueror. He expanded his power by taking over Ruthenian principalities in the south and east. He conquered many cities across modern-day Belarus and northern Ukraine. One major victory was the Battle on the Irpin River, where he defeated Stanislav of Kiev. After this, he besieged and conquered the city of Kiev. He installed his brother Theodor and Algimantas in the city. Through strategic marriages, such as his son Lubart's marriage to a Galician princess, he gained the principality of Halych-Volynia. These actions brought Lithuania very close to the Black Sea.

Domestically, Gediminas focused on building a strong infrastructure. He improved the efficiency of the Lithuanian army. He also built a chain of fortresses and many castles to defend his borders. One important castle is the one in Lida.

During his reign, the Jewish community in Lithuania also grew and prospered.

There is a famous legend regarding the founding of Vilnius. It is said that in 1322, Gediminas had a dream while hunting. He saw an iron-clad wolf howling on a hill. A priest named Lizdeika interpreted the dream. He said the city should be built where the vision occurred. This led to the fortification of the area where the Vilnia and Neris rivers meet.
