Later in his life, he fought the Bohemian state to gain Silesia. He used his army to make his growing state much stronger. These actions helped him move from a small group of tribes to a large nation.

Making alliances was another way Mieszko kept his country safe. He made important agreements with powerful neighbors. He became a friend to the Holy Roman Empire. He also made deals with Sweden and Bohemia. In 965, he married a princess named Dobrawa from Bohemia. This marriage helped make a strong bond between the two lands. He was a member of the Piast dynasty. Mieszko is recognized as the founder of the first unified Polish state. This state was known as the Civitas Schinesghe. He was the first Christian ruler of the Polish people. His work built upon the efforts of his father, Siemomysł, and his grandfather, Lestek. These ancestors began the process of uniting various Polish tribes. Mieszko turned these tribal connections into a formal statehood.

Mieszko was a talented military leader and a smart politician. He used both military force and clever diplomacy to expand his territory. Early in his reign, he conquered the lands of Kuyavia. He likely gained control over Masovia and parts of Gdańsk Pomerania as well.

Much of his reign involved fighting for control of Western Pomerania. He eventually brought these lands under his rule near the lower Oder River. In his final years, he fought the Bohemian state. This conflict allowed him to capture Silesia and lands that are now part of Lesser Poland. He also improved the internal systems of his growing war monarchy.

Diplomacy was just as important to Mieszko as his army. He prioritized the interests of his country in all foreign affairs. Mieszko successfully formed alliances with Sweden and the Holy Roman Empire. He also worked to build a strong relationship with Bohemia. To strengthen this bond, he married the Bohemian princess Dobrawa in 965. This marriage was a key political move. It helped create a lasting alliance between the Polish and Czech peoples. Through these deals, Mieszko protected his borders and grew his influence across Europe.

A major turning point occurred in 966 when Mieszko was baptized.

This event brought Poland into the cultural sphere of Western Christianity. This change may have been a political strategy. It helped decrease the chance of attacks from German margraves. It also allowed Mieszko to reduce the power of pagan priests. Some historians believe Dobrawa influenced this religious shift. Others suggest it was a way to centralize his rule. Because of this, he is sometimes called the "Clovis of Poland."

There are different theories about why Mieszko chose to adopt Christianity. One theory involves the German Margrave Gero. Some believe Gero's military actions forced Mieszko to accept Catholicism to show submission. However, many historians do not find evidence for this in German records. Another theory is that Mieszko wanted to avoid the fate of other Slavic tribes. By becoming Christian, he could avoid being conquered for the purpose of forced conversion. This helped him maintain his authority. He also appeared in a document called the Dagome iudex. This document mentions a gift of his land to the Pope. Some think "Dagome" refers to his Christian name, Dagobert.

Mieszko's family connections helped secure his legacy. His daughter became a queen consort of Denmark.

This made Mieszko the grandfather of Canute the Great. It also made him the great-grandfather of Gunhilda of Denmark. These royal connections linked Poland to major European dynasties. His family's influence reached as far as the Holy Roman Emperor. These ties helped ensure that Poland was a recognized player on the European stage.

When Mieszko died on May 25, 992, he left a powerful legacy. He left his son, Bolesław I the Brave, as his successor. Bolesław inherited a country with much larger territories than when Mieszko started. The state was well-established in Europe. Mieszko had transformed a collection of tribes into a unified nation. His work laid the permanent foundations for the country of Poland.
