He was a linguist, which is a person who studies language. He was also an anthropologist and a historian. Karadžić is most famous for changing the Serbian language. He wanted to make writing much easier for everyone. Because of his work, he is called the father of Serbian folk-literature scholarship.

His work focused on making the language match how people actually spoke.

He used the Serbian Cyrillic alphabet to do this. He removed old letters that people did not use in daily speech. Then, he added six new letters to the alphabet. This made the writing system much simpler and more direct. He also wrote the very first Serbian dictionary in this new style. He even translated the New Testament into this reformed language.

Karadžić was born in 1787 in the village of Tršić.

At that time, his home was part of the Ottoman Empire. His parents were named Stefan and Jegda. He was given the name Vuk, which means "wolf." Families sometimes gave this name to keep children safe from evil spirits. As a young boy, he learned to write using a reed. He even used a solution of gunpowder for his ink!

He spent much of his life collecting beautiful folk songs.

He published many volumes of these songs between 1814 and 1815. He worked with many helpers, such as Vuk Vrčević and Vuk Popović. These friends helped him gather stories and songs from many places. His collections became famous all over Europe and America. The famous writer Goethe even compared his songs to very special poetry.

Many famous people from different countries admired his hard work.

The German scholar Jacob Grimm translated his songs into German. Other famous writers from Russia, France, and England also read them. Even though some leaders in Serbia banned his books, his ideas won. He died in Vienna in 1864. Today, his remains rest in Belgrade with great honors.
