He was an expert in Hittitology, which is the study of the ancient Hittite people. This work required a lot of study and deep knowledge of history. He spent eighteen years working in Moscow as a specialist. During this time, he studied ancient Middle Eastern civilizations. He worked under Yevgeniy Primakov at the Institute of Oriental Studies. Ardzinba was a very smart man who loved learning about the past.

His life moved from books to the world of politics. He was born in the village of Lower Eshera in the Soviet Union. After finishing his studies, he became a leader in his home region. In 1989, he was elected to the first democratic parliament in the Soviet Union. By December 1990, he was the Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of Abkhazia. He became a very active voice for the Abkhaz people. He wanted his people to have more power and control over their own land.

In 1992, a war began between Abkhazia and the country of Georgia.

This was a very difficult and violent time for everyone. During the fighting, Ardzinba and his group were forced out of the city of Sukhumi. They moved to Gudauta to find safety. He used his connections in Moscow to get support during the war. After the fighting ended in 1994, the Abkhazian parliament chose him to be president. This choice was not accepted by Georgia or the United Nations.

Ardzinba served as president for many years, from 1994 to 2005.

He won an election in 1999 without any other person running against him. He worked hard to keep Abkhazia close to the country of Russia. He met with Russian leaders like Boris Yeltsin and Vladimir Putin. However, his rule was also a time of great sadness for others. Many Georgian people were forced to leave their homes in Abkhazia. This process was called ethnic cleansing, and it was a very dark part of his time in power.

As the years passed, Ardzinba became very ill. He could not appear in public after the year 2002. He went to a hospital in Moscow to receive medical help. Even though people asked him to step down, he stayed in office until February 2005. He was replaced by Sergei Bagapsh after a new election. Ardzinba died on March 4, 2010, at the age of 64.

People in Abkhazia held three days of mourning to remember him.
