Dal did many jobs in his life. He served in the navy. He also worked as a doctor. Later, he worked for the government. But his true passion was language. He walked through the countryside to find stories. He collected folk songs and fairy tales. He even wrote down old sayings.

His most famous work is a giant dictionary. It is called the Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language. It was published in four huge volumes. This book shows how people really spoke. It saved many words that people do not use now. Many writers and poets studied his work. Even famous authors like Vladimir Nabokov read it every night.
