One form is called pyridoxal 5'-phosphate. This is the active form. It acts as a coenzyme. A coenzyme is a helper that lets enzymes do their work. This helper helps in more than 140 different ways. It helps our bodies use sugar and fats for power. It also helps us use amino acids.

Plants make their own B6. It helps them stay safe from sunlight. It also helps them make chlorophyll. This is what makes plants green. Animals cannot make B6. We must get it from our food. Beef, fish, and poultry are good sources. Eggs and milk also have it.

Most people get enough B6 from food. It is rare to not have enough. If we do not have enough, we might get a rash. It can also affect our nerves. This might cause numbness in our hands or feet.
