Vitamin B6

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Vitamin B6 is a vital nutrient for humans. It belongs to a group of six related compounds called vitamers.

These vitamers all share a core structure known as a pyridine ring. One specific form is called pyridoxal 5'-phosphate. This is the most active form in the body. It works as a coenzyme, which is a helper for enzymes. This helper is involved in more than 140 different chemical reactions. It helps our bodies manage amino acids, glucose, and lipids.

There is a specific way the body uses these vitamers. When we eat pyridoxine, our body must change it to work. An enzyme called pyridoxal kinase turns it into pyridoxamine 5'-phosphate. Then, other enzymes turn that into the active pyridoxal 5'-phosphate.

This active form helps build important things like neurotransmitters. These are chemicals like serotonin and dopamine that send signals in the brain. It also helps make hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in our blood. The vitamin even helps manage how our genes work. Eventually, the body breaks it down and gets rid of it through urine.

Plants and animals handle this nutrient very differently. Plants can make their own vitamin B6. They use it to protect themselves from UV-B radiation in sunlight. It also helps them make chlorophyll, which makes them green.

Animals cannot make their own B6. We must get it by eating plants or other animals. Beef, pork, fowl, and fish are all good sources. Dairy, eggs, and shellfish also contain the vitamin. Most people get enough from a normal diet. It is quite rare for people to have a deficiency.

Health experts track how much B6 we need every day. For adult humans, the recommended amount is often between 1.0 and 2.0 milligrams. Different countries have different rules for safety. For example, the United States sets an upper limit of 100 mg per day. However, the European Food Safety Authority sets a lower limit of 12 mg per day.

Taking too much from supplements can sometimes cause problems. It is important to follow these safe levels. Most of the risks come from supplements rather than regular food.

Not having enough B6 can cause health issues. Some people might get a rash or inflammation around their eyes and mouth. It can also affect the nerves in the hands and feet. This might feel like numbness or a tingling sensation. Some medicines, like the antibiotic isoniazid, can also lower B6 levels. In rare cases, infants with genetic defects might have seizures due to low B6. Luckily, these seizures can often be helped with pyridoxal 5'-phosphate therapy. This shows how important this tiny nutrient is for our whole body.
