Elijah was a very gifted child. He began studying with a rabbi when he was only six. At that age, he even gave a speech in a large synagogue. By age nine, he started studying Kabbalah, which is a type of Jewish wisdom. He spent many hours reading the Zohar. By the time he was ten, he was able to study all by himself. He did not need teachers to help him anymore. He even studied the stars and math to help him understand his books.

His life was dedicated entirely to learning. His sons said he only slept two hours every day. He divided his sleep into four small parts. This helped him spend almost all his time with holy books. He was so focused that he would sometimes stop eating for days. He did this when he was trying to solve a very hard problem in the Talmud. He lived in Vilnius for most of his life. He refused to take official jobs so he could keep studying.
