Viktor Bout was a Russian man who made a living by selling weapons. He was known for moving arms across many different parts of the world. Because he sold weapons to many different groups, some people gave him a serious nickname. A British minister called him the "Merchant of Death" in a 2003 report. This happened because he often ignored rules meant to stop weapon sales. He used his own companies to move these items to Africa and the Middle East.

Bout was very good at many different things. He was a polyglot, which means he could speak many languages. He mastered five languages: English, French, Arabic, Farsi, and Portuguese. He also knew Esperanto, a language he learned when he was twelve. He had worked in the Soviet military as a translator. Some reports say he held the rank of lieutenant or major. This training helped him work in many different countries.

After the Soviet Union ended in 1991, Bout started a new business. He founded an air freight company called Air Cess in Liberia in 1995. He used large cargo planes to move goods across the globe. These planes included models like the Antonov An-12 and the Il-76.

His companies did many different kinds of jobs. They sometimes moved flowers, frozen chicken, or even UN peacekeepers. However, his planes were also used to move weapons to places like Afghanistan and various countries in Africa.

Authorities worked hard to catch Bout for his actions. In 2008, police arrested him in Thailand during a special operation. The United States wanted him to come to their country for a trial. In 2011, a jury in Manhattan found him guilty of several crimes. These included helping a terrorist group and delivering missiles. He was sentenced to at least 25 years in prison. He spent ten years at a prison called United States Penitentiary, Marion.

In 2022, a big change happened for Bout. He was released from prison as part of a prisoner exchange. The United States traded him for an American basketball player named Brittney Griner. Griner had been in a Russian prison for bringing cannabis oil into the country. After he returned to Russia, Bout joined a political party. On July 2, 2023, he won a seat in a local group of leaders in Ulyanovsk Oblast. This shows how his life moved from the world of weapons to politics.
