The vicuña is a wild animal from South America.

It lives high in the Andes mountains. These animals are relatives of the llama. They are also the wild ancestors of alpacas.

Vicuñas have very fine wool. This wool is very soft and warm. The fibers are hollow and filled with air. This helps the wool trap heat. Because the wool is so special, it is very expensive. People use it to make coats and blankets. Long ago, only royalty in the Inca empire could wear it.

These animals live in groups. A group has one male and many females. They eat tough grasses on the plains. At night, they sleep on mountain slopes. The nights can be freezing. Their thick coats help them stay warm.

Vicuñas used to be in danger. In 1974, only 6,000 were left. Now, there are about 350,000 vicuñas. Many countries worked together to protect them. This helped the population grow again. Today, the vicuña is the national animal of Peru.
