A person who studies flags is a vexillologist. A person who makes flags is a vexillographer. People who just love flags are called vexillophiles.

Whitney Smith was a scholar from America. He came up with the word vexillology. Before this, people studied flags as part of heraldry. Heraldry is the study of coats of arms. Smith helped make flag study more official. He started many groups for flags. One group is the FIAV. This is a big group for many flag clubs.

Groups like the FIAV hold large meetings. One meeting is called the International Congress of Vexillology. It happens every two years. These meetings help people share new ideas. In Scotland, flags have special rules. A leader named Lord Lyon must approve them. He even has a special flag expert. This person is an Honorary Vexillologist. This job is part of the state. It shows how important flags can be.
