The history of Varna began thousands of years ago. Long before its modern name, the settlement was known as Odessos.

The artifacts from the Varna culture date to between 4600 and 4200 BC. Since 1974, archaeologists have excavated 294 burial sites there. They have recovered over 3,000 golden items from these ancient graves.

Various groups have shaped the identity of the region over time. Thracian tribes lived in the area during the late Bronze Age. They maintained active trade contacts with people from the Mediterranean and Anatolia.

Later, Miletian Greeks established an apoikia, or trading post, in the sixth century BC. This Greek settlement became the city of Odessos. The region also saw the presence of Scythians and Celts. These groups interacted through trade and sometimes conflict. The Celts even had a permanent capital at Arkovna, located 80 km from Odessos.

The Roman Empire significantly developed the city of Odessus. It was annexed into the province of Moesia in 15 AD. The city covered 47 hectares in what is now central Varna. The Romans built massive public structures, such as the Large Ancient Roman Thermae.

These baths are the largest Roman remains found in Bulgaria. They are also the fourth-largest known Roman baths in Europe. The Romans also built a complex aqueduct system to supply water. This system was constructed in three distinct stages between the 4th and 6th centuries AD.

The name "Varna" itself has several possible origins. The historian Theophanes the Confessor first mentioned the name during the 6th or 7th centuries. Some suggest it comes from the Swedish word "värn," meaning shield or defense. This could imply the city was a fortified place. Other theories link the name to the Proto-Indo-European root for water or flow. It might also come from the Proto-Slavic word for black. Regardless of its origin, the name became firmly established by the late 10th century.

Today, Varna connects ancient history with a busy maritime lifestyle. The city's landscape includes both historical ruins and modern infrastructure.

Visitors can explore the Sea Garden or visit the various museums. The city remains a vital part of the Black Sea's social and economic systems. It continues to serve as a bridge between different cultures and eras. From ancient gold to modern naval headquarters, Varna remains a central point of interest in Bulgaria.
