Varamin

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Varamin is a city located in the Tehran province of Iran. It serves as the capital for both its own county and its district. While we do not know the exact meaning of its name, some people have many guesses. One idea suggests it might mean a place belonging to a person named Bahram. The name has been written in many different ways in Latin scripts over time. Today, it is a busy place where many people live and work.

Much of the city's famous history comes from the Ilkhanid era. During this time, the region grew into a large urban center. One of the most famous buildings is the Jameh mosque. Work on this mosque began under the ruler Öljaitü and finished in 1322. Another important site is the Aladdin Tower, which is a round tomb with a pointed dome. This tower was built in 1289 to mark a local ruler's grave.

History has brought both growth and hard times to Varamin. Long ago, it was a center for farming near the area of Ray. When the Mongols invaded Ray, many people moved to Varamin, which helped its economy grow. However, the city faced trouble again during the 14th century when the Timurid Empire armies arrived. By the year 1405, a traveler named Ruy González de Clavijo described the city as mostly empty. Later, the nearby city of Tehran began to grow much larger than Varamin.

Varamin is also known for making very special things. The city's carpets and rugs are famous all over the world. Experts often say these are some of the purest Persian carpets. They feature geometric patterns and repeated shapes called medallions. These rugs are often made by tribal people who live nearby or pass through the area. The city also has a history of important industry. It was home to the first sugar refinery in the Middle East, built around 1934.

Many people call Varamin home. In 2011, the census counted 218,991 people living there. By 2015, the population was measured at 216,000 people. The city is also a place for learning. The Islamic Azad University has a branch in Varamin that opened in 1985. This school can hold 15,000 students and offers more than 86 different subjects to study.
