Many of these gods are also connected to nature. For example, some stories use the name "Van-child" to describe boars.

These gods are very different from the other main group of gods called the Æsir.

A long time ago, the Vanir and the Æsir fought a big war. The Vanir were very strong and could break through walls.

To end the fighting, the two groups made a peace agreement. They decided to trade hostages to show they were being friendly. The Vanir sent the god Njörðr to live with the Æsir. In return, the Æsir sent a god named Hœnir to the Vanir. This exchange helped the two groups live together in peace. Later, some Vanir became part of the Æsir group.

Most of what we know comes from old books written in the 13th century. These include the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda. A writer named Snorri Sturluson also wrote about them in the Heimskringla.

These stories were gathered from much older traditions. The Vanir are only mentioned in these Old Norse sources. We see their names in many different poems. These poems tell us how they acted and what they believed.

Many famous names belong to the Vanir. The god Njörðr is a well-known member. His children, Freyr and Freyja, are also Vanir.

Another story says a man named Kvasir was made from a mixture used during a peace meeting. The Vanir also have special names for things in nature. In one poem, they call the sea "The Wave" and fire "Wildfire."

Archaeologists have found interesting clues about these gods in the ground. They found small pieces of gold foil in Scandinavia.

These foils sometimes show people embracing or dancing. Some scholars think these pictures might represent the Vanir. They might show a special kind of divine marriage. Other thinkers wonder if the Vanir represent real groups of people from the past. It is a wonderful mystery that people still study today.
