It sits on the island of Luzon, positioned just north of Manila. The city is landlocked, meaning it has no direct access to the sea. It shares borders with the province of Bulacan to the north. To the east, it meets Caloocan and Quezon City. To the southwest, it borders Malabon, with the Tullahan River marking part of that boundary.

As of the 2024 census, the city has 725,173 residents. This high number makes it one of the most densely populated cities in the Philippines. It ranks as the 11th-most populous city in the country and the 7th-most populous in its region.

The city's identity is tied to its unique geography and its namesake, Pío Valenzuela.

Pío Valenzuela was a physician and a key leader in the Katipunan. The Katipunan was a secret society that fought for independence against Spanish colonial rule. He served as a member of the Katipunan triumvirate and as its provisional chairman. The name Valenzuela itself is a Spanish diminutive of Valencia, meaning "little Valencia." Before the city took this name, the area was known as the town of Polo. The name Polo comes from the Tagalog word *pulô*, which means "island" or "islet." Although the land was not a true island, it was surrounded by rivers that created the impression of one.

The history of the area began in the early Spanish colonial period. In 1621, the settlement of Polo began separating from the town of Meycauayan. This separation was driven by the need for a local church to serve growing spiritual needs. Franciscan friars, including Juan Taranco and Don Juan Monsód, led these efforts. The separation was officially confirmed by Governor-General Alonso Fajardo de Entenza in 1623.

This date, November 12, was later adopted as the city's foundation day. Early life centered around the San Diego de Alcalá church, which was completed in 1632. The area also included several large estates known as haciendas, such as Malinta, Tala, Piedad, and Maysilo.

Over the centuries, the borders of the region changed through various political shifts. In 1753, a new town called Obando was created from the northwestern part of Polo. In 1856, the town of Novaliches was formed from several combined haciendas. The name Hacienda Tala came from the Tagalog word *tala*, meaning "star." This name reflected how the landscape looked after the forests were cleared. The city's modern boundaries were finally set when it became a highly urbanized city on December 30, 1998. This status was granted under Republic Acts No. 7160 and 8526, which classify cities based on population and income.

The region has also been shaped by significant military conflicts. During the Philippine-American War, the Battle of Malinta occurred in the area.

In 1899, the Americans appointed Pío Valenzuela as the first municipal president of Polo to help manage the area. During the Second World War, the city experienced the hardships of Japanese occupation. The local Balintawak Beer Brewery was used as a front to manufacture ammunition for Japanese forces.

This period was marked by violence, including the massacre of over one hundred men in 1944. The old San Diego de Alcalá church was even used as a torture chamber by occupying forces.

Valenzuela has transformed from a rural, agricultural town into a major industrial center. This shift began in earnest after the opening of the Manila North Road in 1928.

As businesses moved in, factories began to appear across the landscape. The city is now a vital part of the country's economic system. Large infrastructure projects, like the North Luzon Expressway, connect the city to the rest of Luzon.
