Vagit Alekperov is a very wealthy businessman from Russia. He was born on 1 September 1950, in Baku, Azerbaijan. His father worked in oilfields his whole life. This inspired Vagit to study the oil industry. He graduated with an engineering degree in 1974. Today, he is one of the richest people in the world. Forbes says his net worth is very high.

He spent many years learning how the oil business works. In 1979, he moved to Western Siberia to work. He became an expert in his field there. By 1990, he was the youngest energy minister in the Soviet Union. He wanted to create big energy companies. These companies brought many small parts of the industry together. This way of working is called being vertically integrated.

In 1993, a new company called LUKOIL was formed. Alekperov became its president and leader. He led the company for 29 years. Under his leadership, LUKOIL grew very large. It was the first Russian company to buy an American company. In 2000, it bought Getty Petroleum Marketing. This gave the company 1,300 gas stations in the United States.

Life changed for him in 2022. Russia invaded Ukraine, and many countries reacted. The United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand put sanctions on him. Sanctions are special rules that limit what a person can do in business. Because of this, Alekperov stepped down from his board position in April 2022. He also used to own a football club called Spartak Moscow.

Outside of work, Alekperov has many interesting hobbies. He is a numismatist, which means he collects coins. He has a huge collection of gold and silver coins. He even opened a museum for them in Moscow in 2015. He also likes to help people through charity. During the coronavirus pandemic, he gave millions of rubles to help.
